Search is becoming answers, not links
Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Grok and Google AI Overviews before they ever open a results page. Instead of a list of ten blue links to evaluate, they get a synthesised answer that names one or two businesses. Ranking on page one is no longer the same thing as being recommended.
This is a zero-click shift: the user gets their answer without visiting any website. As answer engines improve, the zero-click share rises, which moves the value of search marketing away from raw traffic and toward being named in the answer.
How big is the shift?
Around 25% of traditional search volume is projected to move to AI engines by 2026, and early citations compound over time. Optimizing only for classic rankings means competing harder for a shrinking share of the market.
The quality of the traffic is different too. AI-referred visitors convert roughly 5 times higher and stay 2.3 times longer than traditional search visitors, because the AI has effectively pre-qualified them before the click.
Why being named beats being ranked
When an answer engine names one or two businesses, the customer clicks straight through from the answer. The businesses ranked on the traditional results page below never get seen. Being the answer is the new page-one.
That is why measurement has to change. A ranking report tells you where your links sit; it tells you nothing about whether AI recommends you. What matters now is share of voice in AI — the proportion of relevant AI answers in your category that name your business rather than a competitor.
What businesses should do about it
The response has two halves. First, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): measure where AI names you across every engine, then add the llms.txt, structured schema, answer pages and FAQ pages that make you the answer. Second, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): build the authoritative presence a large language model needs by publishing expert-cited content to your own domain and seeding the community sources models trust.
And when the AI does its job and sends a customer your way, someone has to answer the phone. A missed call is a lost customer, so an AI voice agent that answers every call 24/7 completes the loop the AI search started.
